Building Accountable Community-Based Governance and Monitoring Mechanisms to Promote a Deforestation-Free Cocoa Supply Chain in Ghana (Deforestation-free Cocoa Project)

Ghana’s forests are under threat. With one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa, driven largely by cocoa farming, illegal mining, and illegal logging, the urgent need to promote sustainable cocoa practices and forest protection has never been more critical. The Deforestation-Free Cocoa Project will be implemented in the Asunafo-Asutifi HIA, Bibiani Sefwi-Wiawso-HIA and Juaboso-Bia HIA which are the major cocoa-producing areas in Ghana’s High Forest Zone—areas rich in biodiversity but vulnerable to forest loss.

Forests are key to climate resilience and cocoa productivity. But unsustainable farming practices and weak governance threaten both. This project links community-led monitoring with inclusive governance and sustainable cocoa sourcing in line with the EU Deforestation Regulation.
