Planting Trees, Building Sustainable Livelihoods: A Community-Based Forest Restoration Initiative

Planting Trees, Building Sustainable Livelihoods: A Community-Based Forest Restoration Initiative

The Partnerships for Forest Protection and Livelihood in a Changing Climate project, funded by Gower Street, is a transformative initiative by the Rights and Advocacy Initiatives Network (RAIN).

Running from July 2023 to August 2026, this project is designed to tackle deforestation, enhance sustainable livelihoods, and build resilience against climate change in Ghana’s Atwima Mponua, Asante Akim North, and Asante Akim South Districts.

TerraFund was established to provide financial and technical support to locally led restoration projects across Africa under the AFR100 (African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative). The fund supports community-driven solutions that restore degraded landscapes, enhance climate resilience, and generate sustainable livelihoods.tion.

  1. To promote climate awareness among stakeholders in two forest fringe communities.
  2. To restore 32 hectares within the forest reserve using Modified Taungya and increase tree cover on 2 hectares of off-reserve farmlands through agroforestry (Total=34 ha).
  3. To promote learning and knowledge sharing through dissemination of lessons from intervention for scale up.

Specific activities under the projects are:

  1. Restore degraded forest through Modified Taungya System (MTS) and establish nursery at work area
  2. Support farmers to incorporate trees on farm and assist natural growing trees
  3. Promote NTFP production among farmers
  4. Promote Organic farming
  5. Train Forest Monitors
  6. Create awareness on climate change among school children and establish school environmental clubs
  7. Train staff on fundraising, monitoring and learning
