Farmers at Bomiresu Engaged in Forest Restoration through Modified Taungya System(MTS)
With support from GowerStreet, some farmers at Bomiresu in the Asante Akim Central Municipal of the Ashanti Region are being engaged in forest restoration activities through the Modified Taungya System (MTS). This is to restore some degraded portions of Compartment 3 of the Dome River Forest Reserve in the Juaso Forest District as well as enhance their livelihood.
This activity falls under the project “Partnership for forest protection and livelihood in a changing climate” which seeks to empower farmers and rural households for climate change adaptation and mitigation through the use of agroforestry to improve livelihoods and the environment within Atwima Mponua and Asante Akim North and Central Districts in Ashanti Region.
The farmers who are mostly migrants through this intervention have the opportunity to partner with government to rehabilitate the forest. They were supported with seedlings to plant and secured access to farmlands to cultivate food crops for domestic and commercial purposes as they nurture the seedlings till canopy closure. Aside this, they have 40% of proceeds of timber when harvested.
